Breast Reconstruction Breast reconstruction involves the rebuilding of a breast that has been lost due to mastectomy. However, it is not a requirement, and not all women desire it. But for those that do, it can often be a very emotionally rewarding event as it helps women feel more comfortable with their bodies and more able to return to "normal life" after breast cancer.
The Procedure Breast reconstruction can happen whenever the patient desires it. It can even be done at the same time and as part of a mastectomy surgery. Nipple reconstruction happens about 3-4 weeks later as an office procedure.
If radiation therapy is required after a mastectomy, then it is recommended that reconstruction be deferred until after radiation treatment has been completed. However, chemotherapy does allow for reconstruction before chemotherapy treatment has been completed.
Breast reconstruction generally takes the form of implant reconstruction, flap reconstruction, or a combination of the two. Reconstruction does not affect the chances of breast cancer reoccurrence since the amount of breast tissue will remain the same.
