Breast Lift (Mastopexy) A breast lift is exactly what it sounds like; lifting a sagging breast and nipple to give it a more youthful look. This is sometimes done in conjunction with a breast implant in cases where both a lift and augmentation are requested or when an augmentation is requested, but advanced pstosis requires a breast lift before implanting.
The Procedure The procedure, which takes about two hours, entails making incisions to remove excess skin and lift the breast. Scars will result from the incisions, the sizes of which are dependent on the amount of skin that needs to be removed.
Scarring can be limited in cases where incisions only need to be made around the areola and under the breast, but cases that require larger incisions will result in larger scars. A consultation with your physician will give you an idea of what to expect in this regard.
If augmentation is requested, then the implants can be inserted during the same procedure. Recovery is similar to the breast augmentation procedure, meaning you'll probably be able to return to work after 7-10 days, with full activity being allowed after 2-3 weeks.
After effectsThe main aftereffects to a breast lift are an overall improved appearance of the breast and scarring, as mentioned previously.
Gravity will continue to affect the breast, and some sagging will eventually become evident, though how long it takes and the amount of sagging that occurs is dependent on several factors including your skin's elasticity, significant weight gain and/or loss, and significant exposure to the sun. However, post-operative sagging should be less significant than it was prior to having the procedure done.
Things that you won't need to worry about are your ability to breast feed or losing nipple sensation, as neither will be affected by a breast lift surgery.
